artist statement

At the center of this work is the concept of a narrative, the unfolding story, the moving picture. The idea for this work was subconsciously planted within me in a private gathering space inspired by my circle of exceptional women friends. Together we examine our own personal journies in the unfolding of our lives. Unfolded, the series, constantly reveals itself, expanding and evolving, changing in message and meaning. In the works on panel, the brush is replaced by stainless steel knives and razor blades. Often tape is used to create a hard edge while other times a soft stroke creates spatial awareness. The paint or plaster medium is burnished as the paint dries to create a marble-like depth with a polished or sometimes mirror-like finish. I am interested in the intrinsic properties of different types of paper and substrates. In the Yupo series works, the Iayers of pooled India inks urge the audience to consider the pieces’ history, both in origin and on display. The unfolding nature of this series is a representation of my own emotional discoveries of self, and the viewer is invited into this meditative process as well. My work balances intention with chance and is evenly about color, form and physicality. The pieces’ dynamic form and message, combined with their interrogative nature, aim to give the audience insight: all that is yet unknown is still unfolding.
